Softimage Announces Support for Microsoft Xbox 360 ***

SOFTIMAGEXSI optimized for advanced effects creation with new .FX plug-in
Posted by Hello
– Softimage, Co., a subsidiary of Avid Technology, Inc., today announced support for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system with the release of the .FX plug-in - a free effects creation tool for SOFTIMAGE®XSI® software, the 3-D animation element of Avid’s integrated computer graphics solutions for game development. With this new plug-in for XSI, game developers now have the industry’s most advanced 3-D tool combined with the latest in effects technology to create high-definition characters, props and elements for their Xbox 360 titles. The technology powering the Xbox 360 allows developers to build graphically intense high-definition environments with all titles being designed for HD television resolutions (720p and 1080i) in 16:9 widescreen. "Since the introduction of the Xbox, Softimage technology has consistently enabled game developers to push their creative limits in 3-D graphics, bringing film-quality to game titles. The features found in XSI – including the advanced character tools – make the software an ideal choice to harness the creative possibilities now being offered with the Xbox 360 platform,” said Tracey Frankcom, Program Manager, Xbox Tools and Middleware. “Softimage has also long been a valued Xbox development partner, from native DirectX viewing to support for the .X file format in the software. Today’s availability of the .FX plug-in is a testament to Softimage’s focus on the future for next-gen game development.Adds Gareth Morgan, senior product manager for Softimage, “By using XSI with the new .FX plug-in, our customers can immediately begin creating art that’s ideally suited to the Xbox 360. XSI delivers a unique combination of the industry’s most advanced 3-D character animation system, integrated support for the latest realtime effects and the extreme scalability that teams need to meet next generation production requirements.”The .FX plug-in for XSI, which includes support for sophisticated DirectX real-time shaders, allows developers to use third party shader-development tools, to apply those effects to XSI models, and to take full advantage of XSI’s normal mapping and animation tools. Imported effects can be refined and animated with real-time visual feedback. In addition to producing high-definition graphics, next-gen titles will also require larger teams working in a collaborative environment. Earlier this year, Softimage announced support for Microsoft’s XNA software architecture, designed to enable enhanced collaboration between content creators, programmers, management and quality-assurance staff to speed the game production process.

The Making of The Flying Saucer ***

The Making of The Flying Saucer

- Concept
My 2D digital illustration ‘The Flying Saucer’ was made for the contest “Flying Machines” organized by the
CaféSalé forum, a French CG board. I chose a UFO to represent a flying saucer shape in a world based on the angle, looking up at my kitchen window. I found the challenge to be quite hilarious and I had a lot of fun doing the work, because behind it all, there was a view of my kitchen, unseen (until now) by anyone else. Here is how I put the vehicle and surroundingstogether, broken down into steps, each defining the composition and colors of this image........Catch da action at CGN !!!!

LightWave 3D 8.3 & 64-Bit Beta Review *

Fred Galpern unwraps the LightWave 3D 8.3 update and tests the 64-bit beta, reporting back on what is new and improved.
Posted by Hello
- Not too long ago there was a vast gap in the 3D market. Tools were either too basic in what they offered and could achieve or they were prohibitively expensive. Sadly, sometimes both were true. About five years ago things began to change with the maturation of the desktop 3D market. These days 3D artists find themselves overwhelmed with quality options in all corners. There are many different tools to choose from; specialized modelers, renderers, material editors, some aimed at the hobbyist market and some aimed directly at high budget, professional productions. Only LightWave 3D really comes through for all these markets. LightWave 3D [8] should be the tool of choice for folks looking to learn 3D, create home brewed game mods, equip full game development studios and television or film visual effects development studios. It’s easy to learn and at the same time deep enough for serious professionals. In addition to the flexibility of the program itself, NewTek has a pricing structure that appeals, no matter what your budget. They offer some excellent value bundles, some very reasonable educational ..........................................Read On!!!!

The Making of Metamorphosis*

I became confused by the astonishing configurations of insects and the diverseness of their textures, and was not able to summarize my image successfully. However, the theme of this work is not realism, but illusionism. I changed my way of thinking and consequently chose to design an original insect based on human face parts. Stage-2 goes much further and for the first time cebas offers a true platform independent rendering solution that will be able to run under various software platforms and operating systems. finalrender Stage-2 delivers a brand new approach to define and write shaders offering the best mix of all available systems! The need to build complex and time consuming shading networks can be easily avoided by clever use of the new technology offered by finalRender Stage-2.Existing shader libraries written in C can be easily ported to finalRender Stage-2. In fact most of the existing shaders can be ported in a matter of minutes or hours. Shaders written in RSL can also be brought over to finalRender Stage-2, however, this will need some more work on the user side. Future versions of finalRender Stage-2 will directly support RSL based shaders.

cMuscle deformation system for Alias Maya 6.0/6.5

- As a creature TD, I am always looking out for new and useful tools for things from rigging, to helping create a better deformation faster and easier, to simply utilities that save me from having to write an expression 1000 times (been there, done that..blasted tanks). I have been waiting to see what Michael Comet came up with when I heard he was developing a new muscle system last year. I can say now, that the wait was definitely worth it. cMuscle comes from Comet Digital, and is written by Michael Comet, a creature TD supervisor at DNA in Dallas, TX. First off, lets start with installation. Installation is real easy, and is typical for most Maya plugins. Licensing is either node locked or floating, Both of which are relatively easy to get going with. The installer installs the plugin to your maya plugin directory, and also creates a cometdigital/cmuscle directory in your program files dir. Here, there are several tutorial files along with all the help files. Once cMuscle is added to Maya, it also creates a very HEAVY shelf, as there are scripts created for automating a lot of the features of cMuscle. Luckily, the icons are...................................Read On!!!!
