REVIEW: RenderMan for Maya
- CGW has published Review of RenderMan for Maya by George Maestri.Pixar is without a doubt, one of the big kahunas in the computer graphics community. Besides being an elite CG animation studio, it pioneers a great deal of CG technology, most of which remains within the walls of Pixar. The one big exception is Pixar's RenderMan renderer, which is its only commercial software product and has long been the standard rendering technology used in the creation of feature films. Renderman for Maya repackages this technology with an affordable and easy-to-use interface with Maya running on a Mac, Windows, or Linux system......Rendering always starts with applying Textures and creating shaders. Pixar's RenderMan shader is authored in Maya's Hypershade window, which is also where other Maya shaders are created. Most Maya materials and shaders are automatically converted to RenderMan, which helps simplify the learning curve............RenderMan for Maya will also render Maya's proprietary features, such as hair, fur, paint effects, and particles. Paint Effects offered great results. When I loaded a heavy Paint Effects scene that I had created previously, the render crashed.
