"We're very excited about developing for Aperture," stated dvGarage founder, Alex Lindsay. "We view the photography industry as a massive growth market and we're glad Apple has opened Aperture to third party development."
dpMatte uses Apple's SDK for Aperture, which allows developers to use existing Cocoa tools to develop full-featured applications inside of Aperture's existing framework. "One of the things we really focused on was ease of use," explained dvGarage vice president, Christopher Marler. "dpMatte allows non-technical artists to quickly and easily remove greenscreens and place their subjects into new environments." dpMatte is designed to easily remove green and blue backgrounds used in film and still photography in order to composite subjects into new backgrounds. Still photographers use this kind of technology to add backdrops in post rather than commit to a specific backdrop while shooting. Backgrounds can range from simple colors to photographs to complex 3D backgrounds. "Putting our existing technology into Aperture was surprisingly easy," noted plug-in developer Ben Syverson. "I think Aperture is going to be a great platform for us and we’re already planning the next round of development." dvGarage is also working on an HDR plug-in called "HDRToner" for Aperture as well as porting their nodal compositor "Conduit" to the application. dpMatte is available for download at www.dvgarage.com . It is priced at USD $69, but it is on sale for USD $49 until May 3.

The ServicePack is guaranteed to bring the user experience leaps and bounds beyond the excellent standard you already have come to expect. This is worth looking into, even if you are not currently using Craft Director Tools. Craft Director Tools now support merging and X-ref. That means you can create and rig your Craft Director Tools plug-ins in one scene and then use them in another. If you currently have saved files with Craft Director Tools and you plan to begin using the merge/x-ref function right away remember to save your files using the new version of Craft Director Tools before you merge them - otherwise the dummies that you merge will be disconnected from the Craft controllers. There were a number of known stability issues in Maya especially. The ServicePack adds an extra level of performance and stability that mean the user experience in Maya is now very different.

AL and AL make spectacular computer generated videos, created entirely in their blue screen studio focussing on the power of the media, its effect on contemporary pop culture and those absorbing it. Their new work, Eternal Youth, continues AL and AL’s exploration of the desire to be immortal, and whether society’s obsession with celebrity provides a possible opportunity to have your name remembered, by whatever means. The film charts the murder of a superstar, Winston Glory (performed by Liverpool artist and singer Philip McHugh) who is assassinated by a fan who felt he was “possessed” by the fictional musician. Resonating with the murder of John Lennon, and his killer, Mark Chapman’s own defiant utterance that by killing the most famous man in the world he also achieved a notorious fame, Eternal Youth contemplates the endless potential to define our own notoriety and identity via modern technology, whether it be through YouTube or on a mobile phone. As the story unfolds, rendered in stunning CGI, we are constantly reminded we are watching a virtual reality, but forced to confront how much of contemporary culture exists virtually, and how this has a tangible effect on our lives. Interstellar Stella and Perpetual Motion in the Land of Milk and Honey both originally commissioned for television and broadcast on Channel 4 in 2004 and 2006 have won AL and AL several awards and nominations.
In today’s celebrity obsessed culture, contemporary media platforms such as YouTube and mobile video devices increasingly allow us to control and manipulate our own image, providing endless possibilities to reform our identities and become a ‘somebody’. AL and AL’s installation in FACT’s Media Lounge invites visitors into a blue screen studio where they can literally perform a part in an AL and AL future film production. The installation allows the audience to have a direct, performative and instantly mediated experience - which not only references the popularity of television programmes such as X-Factor (a show that has played a massive part in increasing youth culture’s desire for celebrity status and fame), but also recalls important video works such as Dan Graham’s Present Continuous Past(s), Renejke Dijstra’s Buzzclub or Phil Collins’ The World Won’t Listen.
Through their use of CGI, live performance and animation as well as their direct referencing throughout the history of art, film and culture, artists AL and AL are true pioneers in their ability to render the harsh reality of synthetic times and a digital world in flux. For more information please, visit www.fact.co.uk and and download a trailer for Eternal Youth follow this link www.images.fact.co.uk/movies/

+ Kyra was produced with the collaboration of top acting talent, technicians, and artists from the Montreal scene, using the latest developments and techniques in the industry, from award winning software, to optical motion capture, facial expressions techniques, and hair, fur, and cloth simulation. The goal was nothing less than to bring a realistic virtual character to life in a real performance with a gamut of emotions.
Jean Lafleur, with a long career as writer and director in "conventional cinema", became fascinated by the limitless possibilities of this new medium after seeing Final Fantasy, the Spirits Within. As his first venture, he decided to make a short film, but one that would tackle the last digital medium challenge: creating a believable virtual character.

An homage to the classic 1983 Bally Midway arcade game, “Spy Hunter” opens with the vintage graphics and addictive theme music that captivated arcade fans over two decades ago. Under attack by a Switchblade vehicle wielding wheel-mounted tire slashers, the beloved G-6155 Interceptor is destroyed by the Mad Bomber helicopter. As the red truck pulls up to replace the hero car, a seamlessly integrated photo-real Pontiac G8 appears, races down the ramp and takes off swerving around dropping bombs and out-maneuvering enemy cars, leaving its nemeses in its dust.
To showcase the superior performance of the G8, SWAY introduced several “close call” hazards, such as tight turns, a large water puddle and a giant explosion. SWAY’s proprietary Drive-A-Tron driving simulator, which allows for real-time, interactive, accurate and realistic automobile animation, was even programmed to include Pontiac’s StabiliTrack and anti-lock braking. This gave the CG G8 more traction control and quick stopping capability.
“Mine” showcases a beautiful virtual playground, full of high-speed twists and turns. Sharp gradients, incredible turns and a giant loop add to the excitement of the life-size Hot Wheels track. For this spot, SWAY built a sleek and modern environment in CG, where all components and lighting features were designed to appear true to real life, in an effort to create a believable event spot. It takes place inside a giant blimp hangar, which in reality would be the only location large enough to house the construction of such a track. Once the track was complete, SWAY animators, as well as the agency, were able to virtually perform all stunt driving using the Drive-A-Tron simulator.
Realistically, “Spy Hunter” and “Mine” could only exist in fully CG worlds, yet it was important that the G8 could perform precisely as the actual car would. “The use of the Drive-A-Tron allowed us to create the action very efficiently and effectively,” said Chris Nichols, SWAY VFX supervisor. “The stunt driving performed by the simulator was possible due to the use of real physics simulation to achieve all the driving action, resulting in no actual animation of the G8 in either spot. This campaign really showcases just how sophisticated the Drive-A-Tron technology is.”
SWAY is one of the top animation, effects and design studios in North America, with the aim of advancing the artistry of visual content, enabling exciting new creative ideas in any media. SWAY’s world-class artists use cutting-edge and innovative technology to produce unforgettable imagery. SWAY’s headquarters is located in Culver City, Calif. For additional information on SWAY studio, visit its website at www.swaystudio.com.
