+ A new version (b4) of ShapeShop, the sketch-based 3D modeling software has been Released. The big changes are 1) Decal texturing is back and 2) highly experimental Layered Surface Editing tools have been enabled. ShapeShop is a tool for creating 3D models using sketches under developement by "Ryan Michael Schmidt" , a Master's student in the Computer Science Department of the Unviersity of Calgary. 3D Modeling Tool "ShapeShop" incorporates much of his recent work in interactive implicit surface modeling, implicit sweep surfaces, and sketch-based 3d modeling. The new features in the latest version of ShapeShop include Save/Load, Decal-based Texture Mapping, NPR rendering, and many more. ShapeShop currently exports meshes in the ubiquitous OBJ format, which can be loaded directly into many standard tools. Try using ShapeShop to create a base surfaces, and then load it into ZBrush to paint geometric detail, or Maya and 3DS Max for rendering. In the latest release the Layered Surface Editing tools are now enabled. The idea is to extend the procedural style of creating 3D volumes that ShapeShop uses to more traditional surface editing, like you would find in more conventional 3D modeling tools. But unlike those tools, when you apply a surface edit in ShapeShop, you can always go back and change it later.
