SIX Maya+MentalRay Tutorials

+ Six Very useful and free Maya + Mental Ray tutorials on Light and Shade is generously made available by tutorials author Florian Wild A.K.A Astro Man, on his website. These tutorials are highly recommended to any Maya user who wants to improve on their lighting skills. Tutorials are quite detailed and share Various Mental Ray settings used by author to achieve photorealism. Florian Wild says; Welcome to the first of the six-part tutorial series, discussing possibly the most challenging kind of 3D environment: interiors. mental ray (for Maya) users typically get cold feet and sweating fingers when it comes to this “closed combat”; the royal league of environment lighting. It’s for no reason though, as all you need for the battle is a simple field manual (this tutorial), and just a little bit of patience......All the shaders you see are built on the new mia_material that ships with Maya 8.5. This shader was intended as a monolithic (from the Greek words “mono”, meaning single, and “lithos”, meaning stone) approach for architectural purposes, and it can be practically used to simulate the majority of the common materials that we see every day. Unlike the regular Maya shaders, and most of the custom mental ray shaders, it implements physical accuracy, greatly optimized glossy reflections, transparency and translucency, built-in ambient occlusion for detail enhancement of..............Read On Baby!!

World Machine 2 - Terrain 3D Modeling

+ After over two years in development, World Machine Software has released the newest edition of its flagship computer graphics application. World Machine 2 is the latest software package enabling digital artists to create and texture realistic computer generated terrain models. It features powerful tools for simulating erosion and other natural effects, and artist-driven control over every aspect of the terrain. The new edition improves upon its predecessor used for the past four years by 3D artists, video game studios, and movie special effect houses alike to create artificial terrain in 3D.
The creation of computer generated terrain has traditionally been a very laborious process. An artist would have to meticulously hand-sculpt all of the shapes or use hard-to-control procedural algorithms. World Machine 2 now offers a fast path to the creation of rich content, while allowing the artist to exert as much control over the specifics of their terrain as they wish.
Major features of World Machine 2 include:
* Powerful fractal-based artificial terrain creation
* A suite of vector-based visual design tools that allow customization of land features and lend guidance to the automatic terrain generation
* Realistic texturing capabilities using the rich contextual information available
* Specialized terrain effects such as fluvial and coastal erosion, snow and glaciers
* Graph-based user interface that visualizes the flow of terrain effects
* Rapid previews that show how every parameter adjustment and modification
* Ability to import and export common terrain data formats
World Machine 2 is available in three editions: the Basic Edition (free), the Standard Edition ($89), and the Professional edition ($189). The Basic Edition serves as a free trial, offering full functionality but with limitations on output. The Standard Edition contains all of the features listed above and is an excellent tool for the individual artist or hobbyist. The Professional Edition is optimized for users working with large data sets and demanding the highest in performance. World Machine 2 Professional Edition is available for $189 per seat. Site licenses are also available, allowing full use of the Professional Edition features on multiple workstations for a single price. For more information, please visit www.world-machine.com

T-rex Rig for 3ds MAX

+ Just spotted on highend3d; T-rex 1.0.0 is a free character studio t-rex rig for animators by Jean-Philippe Toutant. Who says; The best way to animate this is without the skin and springs interfering, animate the character studio bones first, using just the t-rex figure, everything is lined up pretty well with the bones only. you can trust them for anaccurate walk cycle and general representation of the volumes, then load the final animation on the skinned biped. the springs will simulate the bouncy belly. The T-rex rig 1.0.1 is compatible with 3ds Max 8.x, 9.x and 3d Studio Max 2008.

Grant Morrison's MBX

+ Virgin Comics, an international comics publisher, and Perspective Studios, a leading producer of digital animation, announced today a groundbreaking collaboration with acclaimed comics scribe Grant Morrison on MBX, a new intellectual property and animation franchise based on India's iconic myth The Mahabharata. Morrison's re-imagining of the epic tale of two families at war and the fate of the universe that hangs in the balance features an ancient world fused with incredible technology and super beings. At San Diego Comic-Con 2008, animation for the project will get its first public look. MBX is a flagship title in a Virgin Comics and Perspective Studios ongoing joint venture formed in November to co-produce a diverse range of original animation and publishing properties. The companies expect to announce several animated MBX projects in the coming months, including feature film and video game adaptations."Right from our initial meeting, it was clear that Virgin Comics and Grant shared a passion for Eastern mythologies," said Gotham Chopra, Virgin Comics' Chief Creative Officer. "Of course, since Grant did not simply want to retell the same original story, we knew we needed to partner with Perspective Studios and their innovative artists and animators to truly capture Grant's vision." "This is not a strictly accurate historical portrayal of events, but a poetic, fantastic interpretation of the original text," added Morrison. "The world of MBX is a place of incredible art and technology.
This kingdom of sages, warriors, noble men and women is stronger, faster, fitter and smarter than we are, but still prey to the same emotional foibles that lead us all into disaster.""Obviously, Perspective Studios was thrilled to have the opportunity to help realize Grant's conception for this breakthrough project," Steven Lerhoff, CEO of Perspective Studios, remarked. "We look forward to working with our partners at Virgin Comics to bring the world of MBX to a wide and enthusiastic audience."At this year's San Diego Comic-Con, both companies as well as Morrison will be on hand to debut an exclusive MBX trailer created by Perspective Studios together with a limited-edition sketchbook. Grant Morrison will be joining comics legend Stan Lee on a panel on Thursday, July 24th at 10:45-11:45 am in Ballroom 20, when the MBX trailer will have its world premiere. Grant Morrison's MBX Sketchbook, a limited-edition print (1000 copies only) featuring mind-bending insight from Grant Morrison, beautiful concept art from Mukesh Singh (Jenna Jameson's Shadow Hunter, Guy Ritchie's Gamekeeper), script excerpts and more, will be sold exclusively at the Con.

Animation Short Laadli - Won award for the UNFPA

+ Laadli, an animated short film on the consequences of prenatal sex selection by Kolkata's leading animation studio, Metaphor Studios got selected as the winner of the UNFPA-Laadli National Creative Excellence Awards for Social Change 2008 in the category of Story Boards of TVCs/Films/Animation Films. This award by UNFPA (United Nations Fund for Population Activities) is a nationwide initiative that aims to create a pool of promotional material that could be used for campaigns against sex selection, for stakeholders working on the issue.
The short film Laadli was essentially created with the objective of generating awareness through the involvement of social workers supporting the cause and creating social consciousness on the issue collectively. A need for quality promotional and communication material on the issue of sex selection is the key denominator for this contest.
This three-minute animated short film imagines and at the same stroke does away with the horrific picture of the world that pre-natal sex selection can create. Beginning with the plight of mothers who are forced to abort their girl child even before she is born, it goes on to imagine a picture of a desperate world without women. The number of girls quickly dwindles until there is only one left. This of course meant a mad rush of men after her. Age crumbles away as men appear in their various avatars with their myriad possessions to woo her.

The result is a giant leap forward in production efficiency and consistency, enabling higher production standards.
The ICE environment – XSI functionality is displayed using a node-based dataflow diagram. Each node has specific capabilities. Users connect nodes to create a desired effect. A group of nodes can be packaged together into a “compound”, which is displayed as a single node. As a result, highly complex tools can be deployed and re-used without writing code.
More New Features
- Support for mental ray v.3.6 with new rendering ‘stand-ins’ that will allow users to offload objects along with rigged and animated characters to the disk until render time, resulting in light-weight scene assembly for much larger rendered scenes, and optimized controls for final gathering and global illumination
- Delta II a major update to the lightweight referencing system in SOFTIMAGE|XSI, with enhanced support for clusters and cluster properties, including materials, textures and UVs
- RTS III -- a new Real-Time Shading architecture that will allow fragment and vertex shaders to exist in one node, and will be programmable and controllable from any ICE attribute.
Additionally, Softimage will include new features and enhancements specifically influenced and requested by customers during their production cycles. SOFTIMAGE|XSI 7 will ship with a FREE Training DVD with Official Softimage Training Material provided exclusively for this newest version by Digital-Tutors. Softimage will also offer many ICE tutorials and demonstration videos that will be posted on the SOFTIIMAGE NET community training page. For a full list of features and ICE compounds that are expected to ship in SOFTIMAGE|XSI 7 software, visit: www.softimage.com.
