Autodesk Introduces 3ds Max 2010 Software at Game Developers Conference


+ Autodesk, Inc. has introduced Autodesk 3ds Max 2010 software - the latest version of its 3D modeling, animation and rendering product - offering nearly 350 additional features. The 2010 release provides innovative creative tools: a render-quality viewport display and at least 100 new Graphite modeling tools. It also offers powerful new capabilities that help artists manage complex scenes with greater ease and an unprecedented level of support for software interoperability and pipeline integration.Artists have used 3ds Max to create numerous award-winning entertainment projects, such as "Fallout 3," "Prince of Persia" and "Gears of War 2."
"3ds Max 2010 is a feature-packed release that has generated a lot of excitement in the 3D community," said Marc Petit, Autodesk senior vice president, Media & Entertainment. "This version will help artists work faster than ever before, so they can explore more ideas, push boundaries, and create stunning work in less time." Jeff Hanna, senior technical artist at Volition, is a 3ds Max 2010 beta tester. His favorite new feature in the 2010 release is the xView mesh analyzer. "3ds Max 2010 software's powerful xView mesh analyzer will make it easier for us to ensure that every asset our artists create is correct and game ready," said Hanna. "The xView technology can quickly identify missing UVW coordinates, overlapping vertices, or open edges, among other things. With this tool, we won't have to worry about bad game data due to invalid geometry."

Luxology Announces Customized COLLADA Plug-in for modo


New Functionality to be Showcased at GDC 2009 Chalk Talk Session

An XML-based, open-source file format that enables 3D digital content creation tools to exchange assets, COLLADA is widely used for streamlining mixed-application workflows. Luxology has maintained the original features of
COLLADA, including support for animation and multiple texture coordinate sets and the inclusion of metadata for search operations. The COLLADA tools in modo 401 have been tested using the Coherency Test Tool. Another important capability Luxology has written into COLLADA is support for modo's powerful layered transform stacks, so that multiple transforms can be specified for a single item, allowing such constructs as orbital planetary motion to be represented with minimum overhead. For additional pipeline flexibility, Luxology has built a "modo profile" technique into COLLADA, providing a text version of nearly all modo items and their internal channels and animation envelopes. The modo profile enables everything that can be exported from modo to be imported back with the exact same values, including additional modo-specific data that expresses items, channels and envelopes that are not part of the standard COLLADA file format specification. These human-readable modo profiles can then be directly edited using a plain text or XML editing tool. Additionally, the exporter can output profiles for Maya® and 3ds Max®, describing many elements that are not an official part of the standard COLLADA specification. The COLLADA tools will be provided at no charge to all modo 401 users and will be included as source code examples in the modo File I/O Software Developer Kit so that game developers and others will be able to modify the tools or use this as a basis for supporting other formats as needed. Magic Window into Other worlds Demonstrated at game developer's conference


+ PhaseSpace, the price/performance leader in optical motion capture systems, will be demonstrating a virtual camera at this year's Game Developer's Conference in San Francisco. The wireless “Magic Window” allows directors and artists to see the virtual world using a hybrid PhaseSpace motion capture system and Autodesk Motion Builder. For architectural walkthroughs, video game simulations, and movie previsualization, the “Magic Window” allows real time viewing of characters, sets and action. More than one “Magic Window” can be operated at a time for multiple views. PhaseSpace will also feature a series of video game production simulations. The simulations are meant to demonstrate different video game genres done in real-time with minimal data cleanup. Some of the simulations will include first-person shooter, sports, and fitness games. PhaseSpace will also be offering free sample data and allow certain individuals to direct the motions they wish to use.
The Game Developer's Conference will take place from March 23rd to March 27th at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. The exhibit dates will be from March 25th to March 27th with the previous days being summits and tutorials. The PhaseSpace motion capture system uses active LED markers which modulate, producing a unique ID for each marker. At 3 times the speed and 3 times the resolution of other systems, the Impulse system displays motion data in real time through Motion Master and AutoDesk Motion Builder. Caustic Graphics - Breaks Barriers in 3D Graphics



+ Caustic Graphics®, a new 3D computer graphics company, launches today with a fundamental breakthrough in raytracing acceleration that is set to define a new era in professional 3D production and interactive consumer graphics. Raytracing, the gold-standard for creating 3D imagery, duplicates the natural physics of light, creating stunning images by meticulously tracing the path of light to and throughout any given scene. Caustic's first-generation technology will deliver an average 20X increase in the speed used to create stunning, realistic 3D imagery for film and video, game development, as well as automotive and consumer product design. The second generation of Caustic's technology, due early next year, is expected to gain an additional order of magnitude in performance, offering 200X speed over today's state-of-the-art graphics products. This massive speed jump is due to Caustic's patent-pending raytracing algorithms implemented in a semiconductor design.
The computational complexity of producing cinema-quality, raytraced 3D images involves large, downstream costs, including slow "black box" design iterations and costly "render farm" server infrastructures. These costs are symptoms of a problem with today's computer designs where CPUs and GPUs are efficient at accelerating the rasterized graphics in video games but woefully inefficient at accelerating cinema-quality raytraced graphics. Caustic's forthcoming standards-based CausticRT™ platform enables highly parallel CPUs and GPUs to massively-accelerate raytracing, putting it on par with rasterization and resulting in cinema-quality 3D delivered interactively on low-cost PCs. "For years, 3D professionals in multiple industries have labored under the yoke of slow iterations and unwieldy offline render farms," said Caustic Graphics CEO, Ken Daniels. "Caustic puts the power of a render farm, operating at interactive speeds, on every desktop, enabling designers and animators to get from concept to product faster, better and at lower cost." TextileRepublic Logo Contest


+ Call for entries has been announced by TextileRepublic for its next contest entitled, "Little Logos, Little Designs - (think men's ties)" and will end June 1st 2009. TextileRepublic.com - an interactive community for designers from around the world. Textile Republic is an ongoing design competition where winning designs and logos are used to create a line of fabrics, clothing, wallpaper, stationery, and other merchandise. Winning designs will receive $1,000 cash and a 5% royalty. Designs will be picked for production every 2-3 months. Designs must be submitted online by 1 June 2009. yU+co. Re-Teams with Director Zack Snyder For Watchmen



+ One of the most highly anticipated films of the year is director Zack Snyder’s adaptation of the popular graphic novel Watchmen. Setting the tone for the film is a multi-layered, 6-minute long title sequence conceived by Snyder that features compelling 3D typography designed by yU+co., the Hollywood-based design/animation studio that previously collaborated with Snyder on the title sequence for his box-office smash hit, 300. Set to the Bob Dylan classic “The Times They Are A-Changin,’” the title sequence strings together key events from the alternate history of the comic book series, starting from the 1940’s up to the 1980’s, the time period the story is set in. Through a series of slow-motion vignettes, we see how a collection of superheroes have influenced and altered major events such as World War II, the JFK assignation, the Cold War and the moon landing. Incorporated into each scene is the yU+co. title design, bathed in bright yellow, which plays off of the blood splattered happy-face icon that is a key visual component to both the graphic novel and the film.
“Zack wanted to setup a foreboding tone and introduce the main characters in the title sequence,” says Garson Yu, Creative Director of yU+co. “Most studios want to get the audience into the film quickly and either have a short title sequence or put it at the end of the film rather than the beginning.” Yu continues, “It is rare today to see a title treatment that is six-minutes long and slow-paced. But Watchmen is grounded in complex philosophical ideas. Zack was able to foreshadow the decline of the superhero characters along with the rise of social unrest using the backdrop of the story’s alternate history, but he needed six minutes to do so.”
The challenge for yU+co. was integrating titles into an already edited six-minute sequence that was built without the placement of titles in mind. In order to make the titles feel like an organic part of the sequence, Yu and his creative team wove meticulous detail into the type design. Rather then simply lay 2D type onto the foreground of the live action, it is incorporated in 3D into each scene. “I wanted our titles to be seen as part of the film and not detached and separate,” says Yu. “We took all the camera data such as lens, distance, focus, aperture, etc., and translated it into the CGI.” As a result, the titles track in perfect sync with Snyder’s camera moves and precisely match the lighting, shadows and perspective in the scenes. That extreme attention to detail created a sequence that is both stunning and subtle. For example, in a shot of the moon landing, the titles are perfectly reflected backwards in the helmet of the astronaut; or in a scene in which two dead bodies are tied to a fire hydrant, we see rustling leaves behind the title alter the shadow of the title. E-on Software 2009 Show Reel Call for Submissions

Preferably, final video material should be available in a format of at least 720p (other formats accepted). There are no restrictions as to what third party application is used in combination with Vue or Ozone (if any).

RenderPal V2 2.2


+ Shoran Software is proud to announce the release of RenderPal V2 2.2. The second point release of RenderPal V2, the well-known render management system for a multitude of renderers and compositing applications, brings several major new features and changes. The most important change in this version is the ability to assign a client to multiple pools at a time. Often requested, this has finally been added! FaceBook Poster Contest - Autism


+ The first edition of FaceBook Poster Contest _ Autism is launched by DIVERSAMENTE ONLUS, a non-profit organization that wants to offer a better understanding and awareness of the autism ‘Invisible’ disability, and educate and empower families affected by autism. Posters should talk about autism to aware people about the problem or to underline positive sides of diversity. The contest is open to everyone except members of the jury and organization team and their families, who are prohibited from entering the contest. Any individuals connected to the jurors by any form of relationship are unable to enter the contest.
The contest is open for entries from February the 17th, 2009. Entries close on midnight March the 31th, 2009 (CET time). All the artworks must be 50x70cm (75 DPI for publish it on Facebook. Maybe the Organizers will ask for a 300 dpi version at the end of the contest to print) and will be published by the author himself on this Facebook group to partecipate to the contest. An exhibition with the best posters will be held in Cagliari no longer than 90 days after the contest has closed. Details about the exhibition location and dates will be announced through contest Facebook Group as long as a definitive arrangement has been made. A catalogue containing the best posters will be published in a limited number of copies and distributed to the jury members.

Escapee James Sindle Wins VES Award for "Brains Dance"


+ Escape Studios is proud to congratulate James Sindle, 3D Supervisor at The Mill and graduate or 'escapee' of Escape Studios' Maya Core course, for his prestigious VES award win. James received the award in the category of "Outstanding Animated Character in a Live Action Broadcast Program or Commercial" for his work on the recent Britvic Drench water advertisement entitled "Brains Dance." James led a team that created all of the 3D animation for this entertaining commercial featuring Brains of Gerry Anderson's 1960's puppet iconic "Thunderbirds" dancing to the 1980's classic song, "Rhythm is a Dancer."
