Cheetah3D 5.5 adds particle system

Stereoscopic Camera Fundamentals - Training DVD

+ The Gnomon Workshop announces the release of its first tutorial on stereoscopic imagery. Stereoscopic Camera Fundamentals: Maya and Lightwave Setup with Aristomenis Tsirbas is a great introduction to the subject and is software agnostic with demonstrations in Maya and Lightwave that could be applied to other packages as well. The DVD covers subjects ranging from the biology of the human eye and converting 2D CGI to true 3D, to final output and display. In this DVD, director Aristomenis (Meni) Tsirbas reveals the essentials for creating properly animated stereoscopic imagery. Although Maya and LightWave are used, the course is platform agnostic and can be used with any animation software, even if it doesn't have stereoscopic tools. Meni guides you through a comprehensive overview of all the major principles of stereo filmmaking. Meni begins with a biological discussion of how the human eye perceives stereo imagery, and then covers the principles of 3D, including near and far divergence, the conversion at the screen plane, and working with camera movement. After creating a final render, he completes the lecture by showing how to display animated stereo sequences. This is a comprehensive yet simple to understand lecture that gives artists all the tools needed to generate exceptional stereoscopic imagery.

Download BerconMaps 3.0

+ BerconMaps 3.0, open source procedural textures is available for download. BerconMaps is Advanced procedural maps for 3ds Max. Supported renderers; are Scanline, VRay, Brazil and finalRender. Unfortunately there is no mental ray support. The maps are open source and are licensed under Apache 2.0 License. Noise, Wood and Tile patterns are not dependent (beyond 3D vector class, which can mostly likely be found in all 3D applications, so simple replace command might be enough) on 3ds Max SDK, which means they can fairly easily be ported to any application.To install BerconMap copy the correct file into your 3dsmax plugins folder (for example: C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2008\plugins). After this you can find the maps in your material editor just like every other 3ds max map.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3

+ Adobe has released Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 software for Windows® and Macintosh, the essential digital photography workflow solution that allows photographers to quickly organize, enhance and showcase their images from one application. This new version of Lightroom introduces a completely redesigned performance architecture that better handles growing image libraries and provides an unrivaled raw processing engine with noise reduction and sharpening tools to achieve the highest image quality. The 64-bit capable Lightroom 3 includes new features that optimize workflows and allow images to be shared in creative ways, including support for DSLR video files and tethered shooting on select cameras. Output options have been enhanced with new capabilities to publish collections on online sharing sites. Flickr® users have the ability to synch their accounts to Lightroom with one click, and integration with additional online photo-sharing sites can be added via third-party plug-ins. Customizable print layouts provide more refined control over how photographers present final images, and new watermarking features, with options to modify text, size, location and style, help give professionals and amateurs flexibility for branding images. Lightroom 3 now also includes the ability to export polished slideshows as video files with the option to add audio and title screens. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 for Windows and Macintosh will be available through Adobe Authorized Resellers and Adobe Inside Sales at iis@adobe.com. The estimated street price is Rs 16,353 plus taxes for new users. Recommended system requirements are Macintosh OS X v 10.5, 10.6 with Intel® based processor, or Microsoft® Windows® 7, Windows Vista® Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise or Windows XP with Service Pack 3, Intel® Pentium® 4 processor, 2 GB RAM and a 1,024x768 resolution screen.

Maxwell Render plug-in for Nuke

+ Maxwell Render is well-known for its extensive use in architectural visualization and product design. The software is also used more and more by high-end visual effects studios looking for that extra touch of quality so typical of Maxwell Render. The short animation Alma – rendered using Maxwell – won awards throughout 2009, while innovative studios like Giantsteps in California and Meindbender in Sweden have been using Maxwell Render to bring their international commercials to life. Now the time has come to enhance the Maxwell Render package for VFX studios…. with a plug-in for Nuke!
The plug-in – available today – is the first third-party rendering plug-in for The Foundry’s Nuke and brings two components: the MXI Reader and the MXI Multilight Mixer. The MXI Reader allows users to load Maxwell image files or sequences into a Nuke node with full 32 bits color information. The MXI Multilight Mixer brings Maxwell Render’s famous Multilight feature to Nuke, allowing users to mix lights and adjust the intensity of emitters interactively. The plug-in is available for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux.

3D Creature Development - Master Class DVD

+ This week The Gnomon Workshop announces the release of a new format for training that combines the duration, content and depth of a Gnomon School class with the accessibility of Gnomon Workshop's DVD training library. This special edition 3D Creature Development Master Class, is based on Alex Alvarez's Creature Development course at Gnomon School that is normally only available to full-time Gnomon students in their last term.
3D Creature Development is a creative process that evolves a design by taking advantage of modern 3D tools and techniques. This Master Class introduces the student to the entire pipeline, while exploring form, looks and behavior. Along the way we focus on the experience of working on a project where our work must regularly be presented to an art director or client, while also keeping in mind that the workflow should allow for an iterative approach. This requires an emphasis on speed and efficiency. Projects are never done, they are due. You can tweak things forever, but in the end your work just needs to satisfy the demands of the project, client or specific shot that the work is being made for. With this in mind, all of my techniques are based on a workflow that allows me to spend as little, or as much time, as I have been given. For this creature project, the deadline was one day for each of the seven stages of development: Design, Modeling and UV Layout, Digital Sculpting, Look-Development, Texturing and Shaders, Rigging and Posing, Animation and Live-Action Integration. Regarding the level of technical details we go into for each stage of development, this Master Class thoroughly discusses and demonstrates every single step with over twenty-five hours of lecture. However, there are certain assumptions that have to be made in regards to the student's technical knowledge of the tools being used.
