This means that for any
texture, instead of creating a bitmap version, you can use the Illustrator file directly. So you don’t have to go though the intermediate step of the bitmap. This means files sizes are massively reduced. E.g. if the Illustrator file is about 200-300k, a bitmap could end up being 200-300 meg (depending on scale / resolution), vectors can be a magnitude of order smaller. Skin Shading with Mental Ray


- The Gnomon Workshop has published a new about "Skin Shading with Mental Ray" by Alex ALVAREZ. This Maya Tutorial consist of three chapters; Working with the Fast-Skin Material, Mapping Color, SSS Layers and Bump and Layering Specularity and Reflections.
Snip: Rendering skin with the natural appearance of translucency, specularity and reflection is achievable thanks to the Mental Ray Fast-Skin material. This tutorial demonstrates how to build the necessary shading network and manage the many attributes available. While the Fast-Skin material does have integrated control for specularity and reflections, we also look at how to implement a layered shader that allows for higher level control over these phenomenon. Using a female head as our example, we start from scratch and observe every step of the process, while explaining the logic behind our creative decisions.

Handy Shaders for
- Some real great mental ray shaders for XSI developed by Tek2Shoot R&D, for taking photorealism with XSI to next level. Tek2Shoot's Research and development department is a software development team dedicated to developping next generation tools for digital content creation industry. It is focusing on providing new graphic tools and productivity tools that aim to make big production as easy as small ones for graphic artists. T2S_Illumination - is dedicated to CG artists looking for a single Illumination node to be used as a basic building block for a great variety of materials.
T2S_Lafortune - The Lafortune representation is a BRDF model (as Phong, Blinn, etc...) fitted to experimental values. It allows to create realistic specular with color fluctuation depending on the viewing / lighting angles.
Unexposed Mental Ray shaders - This XSI addon file is a wrapper containing several unexposed Mental Ray shaders for XSI. The interface has been improved according to the Mental Image documentation.
Fresnel Mask - The Fresnel Mask determines the reflectivity of a surface depending on its refractive index (IOR).When used as a Mask on the reflectivity of a shader, the grazing-angles surfaces become more reflective than those facing the camera, adding realism to the material illumination....and more!!

BFurry: Fur Generating Plugin for XSI



- BFurry is a plugin which will generate fur and short hair in XSI. The plugin is shareware. The plugin will generate control fibers for the fur which can control length and direction and can be shape-animated. The generated fur works with standard hair shaders. Generates fur / short hair on polymesh objects. This is real Mental Ray ® hair and will cast ray-traced shadows. Guide hairs are created which control fur length and direction. - wave2RGB, is MentalRay Shader for XSI by Anthony Rossano , who have been working for last fifteen years in mutimedia and animation industry. Anthony have compiled wave2RGB,the shader after runing lots of test and experiments.....Anthony Rossano; I've been thinking that a lot of rendering problems are made more difficult by the RGB color system, and the need to calculate results for the three channels independantly. I started to wonder why we use RGB for such things. I started to wonder if I could write shaders that used a model closer to the physics of light as we understand it today. I took some initial steps in that line of thought, and quickly realized that I'd need to convert from my own colorspace based on light physics to the common RGB system.
